About the workThis white relief by the Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely is a humorous commentary on abstract art. The moving cut-out metal sheets are driven by a simple electric motor whose energy is conveyed by rubber transmission belts. With deliberately simple handiwork, Tinguely created an abstract image that is actually mobile. The sculpture thus asserts a reality for itself that is virtually inaccessible to painting, which is based on illusion and deception. A few years after completing this work, Tinguely became a member of the Nouveaux Réalistes (New Realists).
