on display, room 031 About the workA glamorous young woman on the beach with oversized sunglasses and very red skin – perhaps she is sunburnt. For Martial Raysse, an artist who grew up on the French Côte d’Azur, tanned tourists were a common sight. He created this memorable image using Pop Art techniques. He colourised a large photographic print to tell a story that is both entertaining and disorienting. Together with Arman, César, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, he formed an influential artists’ group named the Nouveaux Réalistes (New Realists).
