About the workGerhard Hoehme compared the characteristics of water – its movement, permeability and mutability – with those of paint. Similarly to a force of nature, colour became the central element in his art. In his shaped canvases, Hoehme picked up on the parallels between the artistic means of expression and the natural world. He also drew inspiration from the ancient tale of King Odysseus's wanderings. In a strait, he and his companions had to face two powerful monsters: Scylla, a terrifying beast that lived on a rock and, opposite her, Charybdis, the all-devouring whirlpool. Together, the creatures represent a threatening predicament: those who escape one disaster inevitably fall into the other.
