Portrait of a Young Woman, not dated
Oil on canvas
About the workDora Schmetz-Diel portrayed this unknown woman in a moment of quiet introspection. As with many women artists of her generation and earlier ones, little is known about the painter herself. The back of the painting mentions the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, which hosted the first exhibition of the artists’ association Das junge Rheinland in the summer of 1919. The Australian-born artist contributed three works to this show; this painting likely was one of them. Together with her husband, the landscape painter Wilhelm Schmetz, she lived in Aachen.
