About the workThis work seems like an eerie dream. A mother and child are wandering through a dense forest. The trees around them blaze a fiery red. The undergrowth blocks every path; it is almost impossible to find a way through. The figures’ mouths and eyes are wide open, as if with fright. Painted with fine strokes, the pair almost blend into the background. Max Ernst was one of the co-founders of Surrealism, an art movement characterised by depictions of fantastic and irrational worlds.
