About the workWhat lies behind the veil of reality? In his quest to find this out, Max Ernst invented fantastic visual worlds that lie somewhere between dream and reality. Birds assume a special role in his work. They serve as symbols of freedom and magical transformation. Ernst, who was active in Surrealist circles, developed this supernatural idea from a childhood memory: Hornebom, his favourite, colourfully pied bird, is said to have died during the birth of his youngest sister Loni.
