The work represents the artist’s fresh start after the trauma of the destruction of the Second World War. Fritz Winter had visited Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos as a young man in the 1920s and was inspired by Kirchner’s attempts to transcend Expressionism using abstract means. Along with Willi Baumeister and Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Winter became one of the three most influential painters in Germany in the immediate post-war period.
