About the workIn addition to rulers and office holders, an increasing number of wealthy citizens began commissioning portraits around 1500. Married couples were often portrayed in so-called pendant paintings, which were separate images designed to be shown together. Like the works here, the individuals usually face each other and the man "sits" to the right of the woman. This position was considered superior and testifies to the man's favoured position. The artist did not sign his full name, but only a "B", which can also be found in other portraits.
