About the workThis book comes from the workshop of the Flemish bookseller, printer and publisher Jacob Bathen. The cover motif shows one of the three theological virtues of Christianity: faith, in the form of “Fides”, who according to tradition had to endure much suffering because of her religious beliefs. The other two virtues of “Spes”, hope, and “Charitas”, charity, are mentioned in inscriptions. These writings on the life of Jesus Christ were printed in 1548: the date is noted on the back of the title page as well as the fact that the devotional belonged to the Rincks, a merchant family from Cologne.
