About the workAs Germany’s first female master potter, Bauhaus student Marguerite Friedlaender headed the newly established ceramics department at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle from 1925 to 1933. While there, she designed the "Halle" series of vases, which are still produced today. With her functional, simple style, Friedlaender set new standards in porcelain design. She left Germany in 1933 because of her Jewish ancestry and emigrated first to the Netherlands and later to the USA, where she was one of the founders of the Pond Farm artists’ colony in California.
