About the workThe South African photographer David Goldblatt began to work with colour around the time that apartheid ended. Up to then, his oeuvre had exclusively consisted of black-and-white photographs. In this portrait, the importance of colour becomes clear. Due to the colours of the wall and the two tables, the image is divided into three large sections. White, red and blue are found in the South African flag, which was officially adopted in 1994. However, these colours can also be viewed as a reference to the country’s colonial history and its occupation by the Netherlands and later Great Britain.
