About the workIn 1905, Erich Heckel was one of the founding members of the artists’ group Die Brücke. He moved from Dresden to Berlin in 1911, where he produced numerous depictions of reclining women, which became characteristic of his oeuvre until the First World War. In his attic studio in Berlin, his future wife Milda Frieda, a dancer who called herself Siddi, served as his subject. She is often placed close to the viewer. A nude figure can be seen on the right behind the reclining woman, revealing the colourful decoration of Heckel’s live-in studio.
