About the workThe painter’s studio is a hive of activity and, when observed closely, reveals different types of work as well as a workshop hierarchy. While the master is completing a history painting, an apprentice is practising drawing. As the caption reveals, the actual subject of the picture is the use of oil paint as a medium, the invention of which was long attributed to the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck. The print belongs to a series presenting the most significant achievements of the modern era, such as gunpowder, the printing press and the discovery of America.
