About the workIn ancient times, legionaries were soldiers in a Roman army unit. This one is wearing what was known as segmented armour, which was common in the first century AD. It is possible that this painting served as preparation for a large-format history painting. To depict historical events, artists made detailed studies of various costumes in advance. In the late 19th century, the art academies increasingly dealt with themes from antiquity. Albert Baur the Younger, like his father who also worked as a painter, returned to these themes several times.
