Oil and tempera on oak
Dimensions without frame131,9 × 175,8 cm
Status
on display, room 002 About the workThe title of this altarpiece can be traced back to its donor, Pietro Priuli, who can be seen praying on the right panel. A high state official, Priuli commissioned the painting for the family chapel in Venice from Giovanni Bellini, probably the most eminent Venetian painter of his time. However, it is not clear what part Bellini himself played in the completion of the altarpiece and to what extent his workshop was involved. The altarpiece was acquired by the Düsseldorf Art Academy at the beginning of the nineteenth century as a prime example of Venetian Renaissance painting and use of colour.
