About the workThe death of Ophelia from William Shakespeare’s play "Hamlet" is a popular motif in art. After the murder of her father, her lover, Prince Hamlet, is banished. Ophelia subsequently loses her mind and drowns. Whether it was an accident or suicide remains unclear. The British artist Maurice Cockrill depicts her as part of a series of female figures who assert themselves against male oppression. Ophelia’s madness and death do not appear as a failure, but as a liberation from total self-abandonment in her love for Hamlet.
