About the workAn unsettling fantasy landscape unfolds in front of a lake – or is it in fact floating in a haze of clouds? Dark, rock-like shapes merge into gnarled structures and forms that flow like fabric. In some places, bald heads and hunched figures appear. Or are the viewers’ imaginations simply playing tricks on them? They are drawn into a mysterious, surreal world. Richard Oelze painted this picture upon his return to the artists’ colony in Worpswede after being a prisoner of war. He had spent the interwar years in the circle of the Parisian surrealists, who created enigmatic and dreamlike depictions.
