About the workThis painting is one of the fruit still lifes that Ernst te Peerdt, a graduate of the Düsseldorf Academy of Art. started creating in 1905. Te Peert combined the elongated green peppers with red, roundish tomatoes, creating intense contrasts of colour and form. Reflections of light and the sketchy painting style make for a lively structure. The everyday motif shows a simple but abundant harvest. The vegetable, which originates from Asia, has been cultivated in Europe since the 16th century and became a popular food.
