Maton Solarisation, 1969–1972
Gelatin silver print
Dimensions with frame300 × 252 cm
About the workThe starting point for this work, which evolved over a period of several years, was passport photographs from a photo booth in Düsseldorf’s old town. Katharina Sieverding processed the snapshots taken there using the solarisation process. A chemical reaction – triggered by re-exposing the film during the development process – creates an inverse effect in the final image. For Sieverding, the face is the point of connection between interior and exterior. This interplay is reflected in the pictures through her experimentation with positive and negative exposures.
