About the workThe mood seems relaxed. Only the outlines of a party can be recognised, seeking to escape the harshness of everyday life. Paula Modersohn-Becker frequently used motifs from rural life, often focussing on children. In the centre of the picture, a girl stands out from the two-dimensional depiction of the people in the background. The reduced execution in muted colours is characteristic of Modersohn- Becker’s painting style. The artist found impulses for such pictorial themes in Worpswede in Lower Saxony, where she spent most of the last decade of her life.
