on display, room 021 About the work"On rubble and shards we are creating the work – fighting, we want to drive our way into the stars." A year after the end of the First World War, when this painting was also made, Johannes Molzahn wrote these words in the "Manifesto of Absolute Expressionism". In the depictions of the painter, who was working in Weimar at the time, figurative elements can be found alongside abstract ones. Molzahn’s claim to combine art and technology is typical of the time. This idea was also advocated by the Bauhaus, which was also founded in Weimar in 1919 and with which the artist was closely associated.
