About the workLooking at this vessel, you can hardly tell that it was once a fine trinket. The amphora shape, unusual in the Middle East, suggests that it was created for the European market from the outset. A counterpart donated to the cathedral in Vienna in 1365 is said to have contained earth from the Holy Land soaked in blood from the Massacre of the Innocents. Despite all the religious and political rivalry between Christianity and Islam, it testifies to the great appreciation for products from the Mamluk Empire.
