About the workThere was a change in banqueting practices around 1800 that affected the design of drinking glasses. Whereas it had previously been customary to arrange the glasses on a sideboard, they were now being laid on the table. Glass services were developed to create a uniform appearance. The trading company J. & L. Lobmeyr, founded in Vienna in 1822, profited from the growing demand. From the very beginning, the company was not a manufacturer but a “distributor”: it had designs produced in Vienna, commissioned their execution in Bohemia and then handled their consignment.
