Blue bottle with foliate scrollwork, 8th–10th century
Blue glass, mould-blown, engraved
(H x Ø)18,6 x 14,1 cm
About the workThe carvings on the bottle look like a whitish drawing. They stand out particularly well against the blue glass. Glass of this type was traded far beyond Iran, its region of manufacture – even as far as China. The woven motif is a regular feature. The foliate scrollwork, which was probably adopted from textile art, is unusual. This is a highly elaborate example of a bottle with decorative carvings.
