About the workA transparent deep red colour represents one of the greatest challenges for glass technology. In 1888, the director of the Ehrenfeld glass factory, Oskar Rauter, succeeded in rediscovering the secret of “gold ruby” or “cranberry” glass. The glass gets its colour from nanometre-sized, evenly distributed gold particles. When light falls on the glass, it begins to glow. This “rummer” glass from Rauter’s estate may have been one of the first products from the series. Its design is a mixture of references from different glassmaking periods.
