About the work
In 1925, the painter and graphic artist Ludwig ten Hompel won the poster competition for the "GeSoLei" exhibition with this design. This large-scale project was based on the theme of physical and mental renewal after the First World War and was intended to showcase Düsseldorf’s image as a modern, social metropolis. The poster focuses on the subject of health: using clear, simplified imagery, it depicts the outline of a figure that is half male and half female, as well as the rod of Asclepius – a serpent entwined around a staff that is considered a symbol of medicine.
