About the workWhose story is being told here? The small crosses on the group photographs provide an answer. Private photographs are valued above all by those who appear in them or who recognise someone depicted. When it is no longer possible to establish a connection to the faces shown, the images lose their significance. Markings guide the gaze when photographs are passed on to future generations. In this way, it becomes apparentaround whom a community is formed and whose relationships stand at its centre. In these photographs, the people both in front of and behind the camera remain unknown. The crosses persist as traces of a memory that has become disconnected from its point of reference.
