About the workThe façade of a Gothic church merges with lush nature here. The painter, architect and graphic artist Karl Friedrich Schinkel added a caption to his early pen lithograph, which he showed at the Berlin Academy in 1810: “An attempt to express the sweet and wistful melancholy that resoundingly fills the heart at the sounds of the church service, drawn on stone by Schinkel.” For the realisation of this Romantic motif, he used a new flat printing process with a stone plate, which had only been introduced in Berlin in 1809 and allowed for large print runs.
