Its designer, Erich Moeckl, who studied at the Ulm School of Design, created it in (the Federal Republic of Germany in) 1968. The "Z" was produced by the West German company Horn and almost at the same time by Petrolchemisches Kombinat Schwedt, which was one of the leading companies in the GDR’s synthetics industry. The chair enjoyed great popularity throughout Germany as well as around the world and was honoured by the Design Center Stuttgart in 1979.
