About the workThis painting by the Berlin artist Carl Kretschmar probably received its title over time due to the posture of the depicted figure and the gloomy sky. Her head resting on the palm of her hand is seen as an expression of melancholy, a sadness or gloom without a specific cause. It has often been associated with artistic genius. Around 1800, the exploration of human emotions was at its peak. Melancholy, in particular, was prevalent in painting, literature, and music, though it has been a theme in art and intellectual history for much longer.
