About the workThe Danish actress Asta Nielsen appeared as the cocaine-addicted opera singer Tamara in the German silent film "Laster der Menschheit" (The Vice of Mankind) in 1927. Her expressive performance, which was categorised as not suitable for minors, inspired Erich Heckel to paint this portrait. He was a great admirer of Nielsen and depicted her several times in various roles. These characters were often conflict-ridden women who defied social conventions. Heckel used strong lines and high-contrast areas in his woodcut to lend vividness to the figure's turmoil.
