About the workDespite the essentialised and therefore generalised rendering of people and objects that is typical of early twentieth-century woodcuts, there appears to be a likeness between the siblings depicted. Like a ventriloquist’s dummy, the younger brother sits on the lap of the elder, looking sideways out of the image. Erich Heckel had a brother and a sister who were both older than him. It is not known whether this is a self-portrait of the artist, snug in his brother’s arms.
