About the workThis decorative leaf comes from a Christian book of hours, a highly personalised book containing daily prayers. Here we see the Annunciation to Mary: the Archangel Gabriel appears before the young girl and tells her that she will give birth to the Son of God. Below this in Latin are the words “Lord, open my lips”, with which the first prayer of the day begins. In the book of hours, they introduce a liturgical devotion known as the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
