About the workDeep craters gape in the dry earth's surface, brittle fissures run through the exposed rock. This painting by Christo looks as if it were thousands of years old: shaped and marked by the forces of nature. In his artistic practice, the Bulgarian-born artist explored the structures of surface and material from 1958 onwards. For his so-called Crater series, he used natural materials such as sand, glue and resin in combination with industrially produced oil and enamel paints. Like layers of earth inscribed with natural and human traces, the works refer to time and transience.
