on display, room 028 About the workDark craters pervade the surface of the image. This landscape of dry earth tones looks like scorched ground. Using thick layers of sand and enamel paint, the artist has created a relief-like composition consisting of several strata. This is an early work by the Bulgarian-born Christo from his “Cratère” series of 1959. He had moved to Paris a year earlier to pursue his artistic career. Christo’s later objects and buildings wrapped in fabric and rope made him and his wife Jeanne-Claude famous around the world.
