on display, room 039 About the workWhat determines the geography of an artwork? Ayan Farah, an artist of Somali descent who grew up in Sweden, treats historical textiles with minerals, pigments and dyes that she collects on her travels around the world. The rust, which is used here, was found in a Swedish bay where Alfred Nobel once carried out experiments with explosives. Farah grew the marigolds herself and the indigo comes from the south of England. In this way, the artist links different places, world views and times and breaks up common linear narrative patterns.
