About the workScandinavia has been leading the way for practical, stylish and affordable furniture design since the 1940s. The Swedish furniture store IKEA, founded in 1943, has certainly contributed significantly to this reputation. Also sold as an assembly kit, this String shelving system was created in 1949 by the designer couple Kajsa and Nisse Strinning for a competition held by Sweden’s largest publishing house, Bonnier. The simple concept consists of two metal “ladders” covered with plastic as well as three wooden shelves. “String” is still sold worldwide in this form today.
