19th Century
The development of photography was characterised by the idea of capturing reality as closely as possible in an image. In addition to Henry Fox Talbot’s photographic experiments, the works of Franz Hanfstaengl and Wilhelm Hammerschmidt offer insights into the early phase of the medium. Photography was used for portraits, travel documentation, artistic reproductions and scientific purposes.
