About the workAs chronicled in the Bible, John the Seer received a vision of God’s plan for the destruction and restoration of the world. This print shows how the Roman Emperor Domitian ordered John to be tortured because of his faith. Miraculously, the prophet survived the ordeal and later wrote down his visions. The Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer created a sequence of images for a new edition of the text, known as the "Book of Revelation" or the "Apocalypse of John". They are distinguished by a fineness of line that was hitherto unprecedented in the medium of woodcut.
