About the workThe Dresden artist Conrad Felixmüller was familiar with daily life in a medical facility. After refusing to serve in the military in 1917, he was conscripted and cared for traumatized veterans returning from the war. In his lithograph, two nurses are hurrying across the courtyard outside the hospital room window, while an exhausted woman with deep circles under her eyes sits in the foreground of this unusual composition. Bold, uneven hatching and the contrast between her dark clothing, white cap and the light-coloured bed emphasize the contrast between calm and hectic rush.
