Untitled
Kunstpalast – Horst Kolberg – ARTOTHEK, © Merrill Wagner

Untitled, 1966

“Love at first sight, I guess you’d call it. The name Merrill Wagner meant nothing to me when I came across this large-format painting by the US artist at Konrad Fischer Galerie in Düsseldorf a few years ago. As with so many great women painters of her generation – Wagner was born in 1935 – art history has taken a long time to recognise her significance. This makes it all the more wonderful to not only discover her work, but also to bring it permanently into our collection with this acquisition and to give this artist a platform.” Felix Krämer, General Director

About the workThis coastal landscape has been stripped to its essence: the colours and shapes have been reduced to symbols. Yet still make the viewer long for a trip to the beach. The work of the American painter Merrill Wagner has only become known to a wider audience in recent years. This piece from 1966 expands the canon of international colour field painting, which forms a focal point in the collection of the Kunstpalast. With this evocative depiction of nature, the artist continues the great tradition of American landscape painting in the twentieth century.
