In the eighteenth century, the artist was regarded by collectors such as Lambert Krahe as a master in the depiction of natural sceneries with particular skill in the treatment of forests. The pictures were celebrated for how lifelike they were, above all because Waterloo had mastered the so-called "Baumschlag", i.e. the realistic depiction of branches, twigs and leaves. His etchings may have served as illustrative material at the Düsseldorf Art Academy when teaching the technique of etching and landscape painting.
