Portrait of a Sitting Lady with a Dog, ca. 1810
Oil on canvas
Dimensions without frame82,5 × 69,8 cm
About the workThis unknown lady is fashionably dressed with a Pinscher in her arms. She belonged to the upper classes, which could afford portraits by successful artists such as Heinrich Christoph Kolbe. After training in Düsseldorf, Kolbe had lived in Paris for several years. The clear, objective style of portraiture there became formative for his own approach. His affinity to France was met with dismissal at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. However, he was highly esteemed as a portrait painter, especially among the bourgeoisie of Barmen and Wuppertal.
