About the workThe East German photographer Evelyn Richter was interested in public space as a repository of traces of history. Here she captured Berlin's Koppenplatz with ist various architectural styles. The square had been an important centre for Jewish life until 1933, when National Socialism brought it to an abrupt end. In the GDR, public remembrance of the persecution of the Jews was unwelcome for a long time. Evelyn Richter documented the square in a peaceful atmosphere. The gaze of a passing boy into the camera creates a fleeting moment of encounter.
