About the workEveryday encounters that go unnoticed: this photograph is from a lifelong project by the East German photographer Evelyn Richter, in which she turned her gaze to people in transit. She hardly intervened in the scenes; it seems as if the travellers were not disturbed by her presence. Only a child looks directly into the camera. His open reciprocation of our supposedly sheltered contemplation makes us the object of observation. Richter, who taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig for many years, created an extensive oeuvre of artistic documentary.
