About the workThis photograph by the Hungarian artist and Bauhaus professor László Moholy-Nagy demonstrates the experimental approach to photography developed at the art, design, and architecture school in Dessau. Unusual cropping, steep perspectives and strong contrasts between light and dark detache the subjects from their narrative context. Bodies, objects and shadows are transformed into lines, planes and rhythms. The work highlight Moholy-Nagy’s interest in perception and abstraction, exemplifying a form of photography that understands seeing as an active, creative process.
