Crater of Mount Vesuvius, ca. 1880
Albumen print
Image dimensions19,5 × 25,5 cm
About the workAs if on a theatrical stage, this group is presented on the solidified lava of Vesuvius. Giorgio Sommer took this photograph just a few years after a major volcanic eruption. The day-trippers pose with parasols or enthroned on sedan chairs in their light-coloured Sunday best next to the local porters, whose clothing clearly distinguishes them from the wealthy travellers. This group portrait not only documents what tourism was like at the time, but also illustrates differences between the social classes.
