About the workThe photographer Carlo Ponti published widely popular collections of pictures of Venetian landmarks. The trade in tourist snapshots of the lagoon city was booming in the mid-nineteenth century. While this view of the Porta della Carta is a classic print, optical illusions were used in other images to bring their scenes to life. Ponti and his contemporaries were early contributors to the mass media dissemination of the idea of Venice that still exists in the popular imagination to this day.
