Untitled (Venice), nach/after 1890
Photogravure
Image dimensions32,5 × 22,3 cm
About the workIn the mid-nineteenth century, the trade in photographic views of Venice flourished thanks to tourism. This photograph does not show any of the famous sights, but rather provides a glimpse of a small canal away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The houses, overgrown with vegetation, have their own magic, even without a grandiose, decorative façade. The nuanced shades of grey underline the romantic character of the scene. The work owes its special tonality and subtle gradations of brightness to his photographic technique, the fine printing process of photogravure.
