About the workModelled on an elephant’s head, this is the only item of furniture created by the painter and sculptor Bernard Rancillac. The chair became famous thanks to an exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1968 titled “Les assises du siège contemporain”, which focused on provocative furniture. In the early 1960s, Rancillac was one of the pioneers of French figurative art. He used objects, photos, press images and comic strips in his works that he reinterpreted in challenging ways, as he did with this elephant chair.
